In recognition of World Drowning Prevention Day on Thursday 25th July, we’re proud to highlight one of our passionate and inspiring swimmers here at Moss Vale Aquatic Centre, Julia.

A familiar face at the pool, Julia has not only reignited her own swimming journey but also inspired multiple generations of her family to do the same!

We asked her to share a little about her swimming story:

What inspired you to start swimming?
“I grew up in Cronulla and spent most days at the beach. But as a single mum, I always put my kids first and rarely made time for myself something many mums can relate to. In August 2024, I decided to swim for weight loss and wellbeing. Being profoundly deaf since 2015 and living with no balance, swimming became the perfect solution.”

What’s your current routine and favourite thing about swimming?
“I now swim around 3km daily, creating my own sets from years of watching my kids train. It’s not just about fitness – it’s peaceful, meditative, and incredibly rewarding.”

Have you achieved any goals or have any current targets?
“Absolutely! I moved from the exercise pool to the 25m lap pool and recently competed in my first swim club event in 40 years. I’m now working towards the Captain Christie Open Water Swim and competing in Masters events.”

How has swimming impacted your fitness or wellbeing?
“Swimming has completely transformed my physical and mental health. It’s brought me closer to my family, especially my grandkids who swim here at MVAC with me. That alone is a dream come true.”

Any advice for newcomers to the pool?
“Don’t be embarrassed or unsure. Start small, set goals and be proud of every step forward. A positive mindset and the support of the amazing BlueFit Swimming team here at Moss Vale Aquatic Centre has made all the difference.”
