Week 3: Evening Self Care

Week 3: Evening Self Care cover

When we hear "self care," we often picture a sunrise walk, glowing skin routines, or midday mindfulness. However the most important phase of self care happens after the sun goes down.

As part of Mindful May we’re exploring how evening self care is the intentional bridge between the active, demanding hours of your day and the deep restoration of the night. Instead of just crashing into bed with a racing mind, a structured p.m. routine gently signals to your brain and body that it is safe to finally power down and relax.

However switching off effectively to position yourself for an evening of rest is quite difficult especially with the stressors of everyday life. There is no one size fits all formula, routine will look different for everyone.

Digital Detox

One of the most effective ways to position yourself for deep, restorative sleep is to develop your very own evening digital detox. We are constantly plugged in, and taking your phone or tablet to bed often leads to mindless scrolling or checking "just one last" work email.

This habit keeps your brain in a state of high alert. Furthermore, the blue light emitted from our screens actively tricks the brain into thinking it is still daytime, suppressing the production of melatonin (the hormone responsible for sleep).

To combat this, we’re challenging you to commit to a strict "screens off" rule 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime. You can set yourself up for success by charging your phone across the room (or in a completely different room) and utilising your phone's "Do Not Disturb" or "Sleep" modes.

Once the screens are away, replace that digital noise with analog, calming activities such as:

  • Getting lost in a good book.
  • Journalling (brain dumping).
  • Taking your time with a soothing skincare routine.
  • Spending 10 minutes doing some gentle stretching or foam rolling.

Move and Unwind

Similarly, at the end of your workday, if you are looking for a workout class that will help you unwind for a relaxing night, Body Balance is the answer! Just find the timetable on our BlueFit app to plan your session. By blending gentle elements of Yoga, Tai Chi, and Pilates, this class helps release the physical tension of the day. The focus on flowing movement and controlled breathing naturally lowers your heart rate and gives your mind permission to finally switch off.

Ultimately, evening self care isn’t about adding more tasks to your to-do list; it’s about subtracting the noise so you can reconnect with yourself. Whether it’s through a digital detox or the rhythmic flow of a Body Balance class, these intentional choices transform sleep from a functional necessity into a restorative ritual. As you lean into the final days of Mindful May, remember that how you end your day determines how you begin the next. Give yourself permission to unplug, breathe, and truly power down.

You’ve earned the rest.
